Your Essential Guide to Winter Surfing
When the temperatures drop and the beaches quieten down, a whole new side of surfing opens up. Winter brings cleaner swells, less crowded line-ups and some of the most rewarding sessions of the year. Here are our top winter surfing tips to help you stay warm, stay safe, and get the most out of your cold-water sessions.
1. Wear the right winter wetsuit
A good suit makes all the difference. Go for a 5/4mm or 6/5/4mm chest zip wetsuit with sealed seams and a snug fit to stop the cold flushes.
2. Don’t forget your winter accessories
Cold hands and feet will end your surfing session fast. Make sure you’ve got boots, gloves and a hood which is essential for heat retention.
3. Warm up before you paddle out
A quick 3–5-minute warm-up such as light jogging, arm swings or breathwork will help your body to adjust and boost your performance in the cold.
4. Keep moving
Staying active in the water keeps your body temperature up. Paddle between sets and catch waves regularly to avoid getting cold.
5. Stay warm after your surf
Make sure to pack a changing robe, warm clothes, a big towel, a hot drink and water bottle. Standing on your board bag or a towel while changing helps too.
