Private surf coaching built around your progress
Blue Barrel is a mobile surf school working across Cornwall's north and south coasts. Every lesson is private, so the coaching is about you and the people you came with, not a crowd of strangers.
Our ISA-qualified instructors have earned more than 75 five-star reviews, and most first-timers stand up in their first session.
Bringing children? They're welcome from age 5, as long as a parent or guardian stays in the water with them. We coach you both.
Surf lessons for every level
Beginner surf lessons
We start from scratch with board control, paddling and pop-up technique on the sand, then take it into the white water. Most first-timers stand up in their first session.
Improver and intermediate coaching
Comfortable in the white water? We work on green waves, paddling out, reading waves and the basics of turning, with the honest feedback only a private lesson can give.
Family surf lessons
Sessions shaped so everyone gets something from them, from nervous kids to returning adults. Children are welcome from age 5 with a parent or guardian in the water.
Private surf lesson prices
A private 2-hour lesson is £100 for one surfer. Each extra person adds £30, up to 8 in a group, so the more of you there are, the less it costs each.
That's £65 each for a 2-hour private lesson.

Surf lesson questions
How much does a surf lesson cost?
A private 2-hour lesson is £100 for one person. Each extra surfer adds £30, so 2 people pay £130 in total (£65 each) and 4 people pay £190 (about £48 each). All equipment is included.
What if the surf is poor on the day?
We're mobile, so we move to whichever Cornwall beach has the best conditions for your ability. If every location is genuinely unsuitable, we'll work with you to reschedule.
Do I need to bring anything?
Just your swimwear and a towel. Your lesson includes a wetsuit, surfboard and all accessories.
How fit do I need to be?
You don't need to be athletic. You need basic fitness and to be able to swim at least 25 metres comfortably. Lessons run for 2 hours.
Can my children join?
Yes. Children can join from age 5, as long as a parent or guardian is in the water with them throughout.
What times do lessons start?
From November to March, lessons start at 10am and 1pm. From April to October, they start at 10am, 1pm and 4pm, with an optional 6pm sunset lesson.
Where do lessons take place?
Across Cornwall's north and south coasts: South Fistral in Newquay, St Ives Bay (Gwithian and Porthkidney), Perran Sands, Marazion, Perranuthnoe and Praa Sands.
