Blue Barrel operates as a mobile surf school across Cornwall's finest beaches, so you always get the right conditions for your level.
Want to bring the kids along? No problem, children can join as long as a parent or guardian stays in the water with them. We’ll guide you both and make sure everyone has a safe, enjoyable session.

Beginner Surf Lessons in Cornwall
New to surfing? We start from scratch, board control, paddling, and pop-up technique on the sand before you hit the water. Most first-timers stand up in their first session.
Intermediate Surf Lessons in Cornwall
Comfortable in the white water but ready for more? We work on green waves, paddle-out technique, wave reading, and the foundations of turning, with honest, focused feedback only a private lesson can deliver.
Family Surf Lessons in Cornwall
Private family sessions tailored so everyone gets something from the lesson, from nervous kids to returning adults. Children welcome from age 5 with a parent or guardian in the water.
Locations and Timings
We offer private surf lessons at some of Cornwall’s best beaches along the north and south coasts, including the popular surf spots of Gwithian and South Fistral. Whether you’re a beginner or intermediate surfer, our experienced team can help you choose the ideal beach based on your skill level and current surf conditions. We prioritise selecting the safest and most suitable surf spots in Cornwall to ensure you get the best possible learning experience.
When booking your private surf lesson online, you can select your preferred location. Blue Barrel Surf School runs lessons year-round to suit all surfers.
Winter Surf Lessons (November–March): 10 AM & 1 PM
Summer Surf Lessons (April–October): 10 AM, 1 PM, and 4 PM plus optional 6pm sunset lessons for a unique Cornwall surf experience.
If you need a different start time, just ask! We’re flexible and will do our best to accommodate your schedule.
FAQs
What happens if the surf conditions aren't good on the day of my lesson?

As a mobile surf school, we have the flexibility to move to whichever beach in Cornwall has the best conditions for your lesson. We monitor the surf forecast closely and always aim to get you the most suitable waves for your ability. If conditions across all locations are genuinely unsuitable, we'll work with you to reschedule.
Do I need to bring any equipment?

Nothing at all. Your lesson includes a high-quality wetsuit, surfboard, and all necessary accessories. Just turn up in your swimming gear and we'll handle the rest.
How fit do I need to be for a surf lesson?

You don't need to be an athlete. A basic level of fitness and the ability to swim at least 25 metres comfortably is all we ask. Our 2-hour private surf lessons in Cornwall are designed to be challenging enough to be rewarding but accessible enough for most adults and children.
Are your surf lessons suitable for children?

Yes, children are very welcome. Kids can join adult lessons as long as a parent or guardian is in the water with them throughout. We adapt the coaching to make sure younger surfers get as much from the session as the adults.
Where do surf lessons take place?

We operate across several beaches on Cornwall's north and south coasts, including Gwithian, South Fistral in Newquay, Perran Sands, Praa Sands, and Marazion. The specific location is chosen based on surf conditions, your ability, and your preference.

Our surf lessons are 2 hours long in duration. Please note some locations may require a short walk in which case the session timings may be slightly longer. We will notify you if this is the case.

No wetsuit or surfboard? We’ve got you covered. Included in your lesson is use of our high quality wetsuits and accessories. Our quality wetsuits are guaranteed to keep you toasty during your session. We also have a wide selection surfboards for you to use whatever your ability free of charge.
