Cornwall surf beaches chosen daily for the best waves

Most surf schools are tied to one beach, so you get whatever it serves up on the day. Blue Barrel is a mobile surf school. We bring the boards, wetsuits and an ISA-qualified instructor to whichever beach has the best waves for your level.

In the summer months we usually stay on the north coast, exploring the beaches of St Ives Bay and world-famous Fistral Beach in Newquay. When the swell picks up in autumn and through winter, we move between the north and south coasts depending on the surf forecast, looking for the cleanest, safest waves.

Surf lessons at South Fistral, Newquay

Fistral is Newquay's best-known surf beach and a world-renowned break that belongs on every surfer's bucket list. We teach at South Fistral, the southern end of the beach, where the surrounding cliffs shelter the water from strong southerly and south-westerly winds.

That shelter means cleaner, more manageable waves and longer rides, even on days when the rest of the coast is choppy. It suits beginner surf lessons in the white water and improvers ready to ride green waves.

Surf lessons at St Ives Bay: Gwithian and Porthkidney

St Ives Bay in West Cornwall has more than 3 miles of golden sand and some of the most versatile surf spots on the north coast. With several beaches facing slightly different directions, there's usually somewhere that works, whatever the wind and swell.

At the eastern end, Gwithian near Hayle is a favourite for its consistent waves, spacious beach and views of Godrevy Lighthouse, ideal for beginner and family surf lessons. On the western edge, Porthkidney Sands between Lelant and Carbis Bay is a long, quieter stretch of golden sand.

More Cornwall surf spots we teach at

South Fistral and St Ives Bay are our main bases, but we also teach at these beaches depending on the conditions and your preference.

North coast

Perran Sands, Perranporth

A long, dune-backed beach just north of Perranporth with reliable swell and a quieter feel than the busier town beaches. There's plenty of room to find your own peak, which makes it a relaxed place for surf lessons in Perranporth, even in the summer holidays.

South coast

Marazion, near Penzance

A south coast beach looking straight out to St Michael's Mount, and one of the most scenic places in Cornwall to learn to surf. The closest of our beaches to Penzance.

South coast

Perranuthnoe, Mount's Bay

A small village beach a short drive east of Marazion, and a quiet option for surf lessons near Penzance.

South coast

Praa Sands, near Porthleven

A hidden gem on the south coast, with a long sandy beach and friendly waves. When a south-westerly swell lines up with a northerly wind, it's great fun for every level, and handy for anyone staying near Porthleven or Penzance.

Which Cornish beach works in which wind?

Surfers look for offshore winds, blowing from the land out to sea, which keep the waves smooth. Pick today's wind direction to see which of our beaches usually handle it best.

In a south-westerly wind, try South Fistral.

A general guide. Swell size, tide and wind strength matter too, so we check the forecast every morning and choose the safest beach for your level.

How we choose your surf lesson beach

  1. 1

    We check the forecast

Every morning we look at swell size, wind direction, tide and weather for all seven beaches.

  2. 2

We match it to your level

Beginners need gentle, even white water. Improvers need clean green waves. Families need space and shallow water. We pick the beach that fits your group.

  3. 3

We tell you where to meet

You can choose a beach when you book. If conditions there aren't right, we'll suggest a better one nearby and confirm the meeting point before your lesson.

Surf lesson location questions

Where do your surf lessons take place in Cornwall?

We teach on seven beaches: South Fistral in Newquay, Gwithian and Porthkidney Sands in St Ives Bay, and Perran Sands at Perranporth on the north coast, plus Marazion, Perranuthnoe and Praa Sands in Mount's Bay on the south coast.

Do you run surf lessons in Newquay?

Yes. We teach at South Fistral, the southern end of Newquay's Fistral Beach, when the conditions suit your level.

Do you run surf lessons near St Ives and Hayle?

Yes. We teach at Gwithian near Hayle and at Porthkidney Sands between Lelant and Carbis Bay, both in St Ives Bay.

Are there surf lessons near Penzance?

Yes. On the south coast we teach at Marazion, Perranuthnoe and Praa Sands, all in Mount's Bay and within a short drive of Penzance.

Which Cornish beach is best for beginner surf lessons?

It depends on the day. Long, sandy beaches with gentle white water, such as Gwithian, Perran Sands and Praa Sands, are often ideal, but the right choice changes with the swell and wind. We pick the safest beach for your level each morning.

Can I choose which beach my lesson is at?

Yes. Add your favourite spot to your booking and we'll do our best to make it work. If the conditions there aren't safe or suitable on the day, we'll suggest a better beach nearby.

What happens if there are no waves, or the waves are too big?

Because we're mobile, we move your lesson to whichever beach has the right conditions for your ability. If every location is genuinely unsuitable, we'll work with you to reschedule.
